Dole Urges Added Armenia Quake Aid

WASHINGTON — Senate Republican Leader Bob Dole said Friday that he will seek increased American aid for reconstruction in earthquake-damaged Soviet Armenia.
According to a statement released by his Washington office, Dole (R-Kan.) made the pledge as he and his wife, Labor Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole, toured the damaged areas and delivered $50,000 worth of relief supplies. The supplies were gathered by Project Hope, a private U.S. relief agency.
The U.S. government has provided $4 million worth of assistance, most of it in transportation, since the Dec. 7, 1988, earthquake that killed 25,000 people. Americans have given another $160 million privately, Dole said.
