NATION : $897-Million Farm Aid Bill Signed
WASHINGTON — President Bush, saying “farmers have indeed suffered,†today signed legislation providing $897 million in disaster relief for farms where crops were battered this year by rain, drought and other foul weather.
In remarks at a signing ceremony, Bush said the Disaster Assistance Act of 1989 brings “important relief to farm families hit by the extreme weather.â€
“The farmer is at the mercy of the forces of nature, and sometimes nature fails him,†said the President, who persuaded Congress to trim the relief package from an earlier $1.3-billion version passed by the House.
“This act will help farmers recover after damaging rain and wind and will see others through a year when they’ve had to stand by and watch their crops fail,†Bush said.
