WORLD : Israeli Soldiers Kill Settler’s Son
JERUSALEM — A Jewish settler mistook soldiers in the occupied West Bank for Palestinians about to attack and fired on the troops, provoking return fire that killed his infant son, the army said today.
Itai Hamtzani, 19 months, was shot in the head and died at Tel Hashomer Hospital in Tel Aviv. The army said the soldiers opened fire when the father, Daniel Hamtzani, 30, stopped his car Tuesday night and shot into a grove of trees at an army patrol.
The father was shot in the chest and slightly wounded, and a second son, Ordan, 4, was slightly wounded, the army said.
The incident occurred while Hamtzani was traveling to his home in the settlement of Ariel. About 70,000 Jewish settlers live among 1.7 million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
