Jordan, Fellow NBA Stars Play Tonight in Sports Arena
SAN DIEGO — A move is afoot to return a National Basketball Assn. team to San Diego, but for the present, a collection of today’s stars will play in the Seagrams NBA All-Star game tonight at 7:30 in the Sports Arena.
Atlanta Hawks forward Cliff Levingston, a seven-year pro who went to Morse High School, is the “commissioner†of the event.
“There’s a lot of red tape to go through,†Levingston said. “The stipulations are very tough and insurance is a big part of it. We have to be able to insure players like Michael Jordan. And players are spread out all over the country during the summer. Trying to reach them is not easy.â€
Jordan, Charles Barkley, Mark Jackson and Karl Malone were added to the lineup Monday, joining previously committed stars Magic Johnson, Ron Harper, Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman, Clyde Drexler, Gary Grant, Charles Smith, Reggie Theus, Spud Webb, Herb Williams, Reggie Miller, Kiki Vandeweghe, Olden Polynice, Brad Sellers and Jerome Kersey.
Levingston said the game might serve as a barometer of San Diego’s interest in pro basketball.
