WORLD : Higgins’ Wife Believes He’s Dead
WASHINGTON — The wife of Marine Lt. Col. William R. Higgins said today that she considers her husband dead, and she offered her support to President Bush as he “tries to save the living and end the suffering†of other hostages in Lebanon.
Robin Higgins, a Marine Corps major who works at the Pentagon, told reporters that the time had come to tell her husband “we love him and miss him. . . . Rich went to Lebanon in the service of the United Nations because he believed he could be useful, that he could help, that he was needed,†Mrs. Higgins said.
Her statement came a day after the FBI said it had concluded “within a reasonable degree of medical certainty†that the person depicted in a videotape hanging from a makeshift gallows was Higgins.
