Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been confirmed as the Islamic spiritual successor to the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who was the nation’s supreme leader, the official Islamic Republic New Agency reported. IRNA said the 83-member Assembly of Experts--a group of Iranian jurists and clerics--reaffirmed its vote taken June 4--the day after Khomeini’s death--that had provisionally elected Khamenei, 50, to the post in accordance with Khomeini’s wishes.
