THE SIDELINES : 5 Rescued From Capsized Sailboat
SAN FRANCISCO — A freighter rescued the five crew members of a sailboat that capsized in the Pacific en route to California from Hawaii on Thursday night after the classic long-distance Transpac race.
The San Francisco-based Pandemonium overturned about 300 miles west of San Francisco after its keel broke off, Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Egbert Vallecillo said.
A jetliner picked up the racing sailboat’s emergency beacon just before 5 p.m. Thursday. A Coast Guard plane spotted the four men and one woman in two lifeboats near the sailboat and asked the crew of a nearby freighter to pick them up.
