China demanded that South Korea “immediately and unconditionally†return a Chinese army major and his wife who defected last weekend across the border from North Korea. Maj. Zuo Xiukai, 41, of the People’s Liberation Army and his wife defected by simply walking into the U.N.-controlled truce village of Panmunjom. He had been stationed in Communist North Korea as a member of the Chinese delegation to the Korean Military Armistice Commission. The defection poses a thorny diplomatic problem for the governments in Seoul and Beijing, which have no official relations but do have booming, unofficial trade ties.
