The State - News from Aug. 1, 1989
State Insurance Commissioner Roxani Gillespie has asked leading insurance sellers in California to comply no later than Aug. 7 with a request made last week by several consumer and public-interest organizations for data the companies use in setting auto insurance rates. In letters to the Consumers Union, California Common Cause, the Insurance Consumer Action Network and Voter Revolt, among the groups requesting the information, Gillespie termed their request “fair” and said she had forwarded it to the companies with a request that they comply. According to Gillespie’s request, the information would be provided before the next round of Insurance Department hearings, scheduled for the week of Aug. 15, on how to interpret Proposition 103 requirements that a driver’s safety record, miles driven and years of driving experience be made more important factors in setting rates than where a driver lives.
