U.S. to Boycott Chinese Army Fete

WASHINGTON — The Bush Administration has prohibited U.S. diplomats and other government officials from attending ceremonies sponsored throughout the world by the Chinese government next week in honor of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, State Department officials said Friday.
“U.S. government personnel will not go--not in Washington, not in Beijing, not anywhere in the world,” a State Department official said. “This is not the moment in history for U.S. officials to be honoring the PLA.”
Each year, the Chinese invite guests to celebrate the anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army, which was founded on Aug. 1, 1927. In the last few years, a large number of U.S. officials, including uniformed officers from the Pentagon, have participated in the Aug. 1 ceremonies at the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
