Housing and Urban Development Secretary Jack Kemp said people will “go to jail” in the burgeoning HUD scandal. “I think there are people who ought to go to jail,” Kemp said during an interview with CBS News. “I think there are people who give free enterprise a bad name. I think there are people who give Christianity a bad name. I think there are people who give the war on poverty a bad name to the inner city folks.” Kemp said that although “the hemorrhaging” at HUD has been stopped, he was unsure if the department has been “totally cleansed.” CBS also reported that the FBI has opened more than 600 criminal investigations into waste, fraud and abuse in federally subsidized projects.
