Tanzania-Zambia Rail Line to Get U.S. Aid

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — The U.S. Agency for International Development announced Monday a $17-million aid package to rehabilitate the Tanzania-Zambia railway.
The money will be used to buy eight electric locomotives, spare parts, tools and other equipment.
The 1,150-mile railway, which links Tanzania’s Indian Ocean port city of Dar es Salaam with Kapiri Mposhi, just north of Zambia’s capital of Lusaka, was built with Chinese assistance in the early 1970s.
