Ground breaking is scheduled Wednesday for the $13-million Multi-Modal Transportation Center that will bring Amtrak train service to Irvine next year.
The 10 a.m. ceremony will be held near the intersection of Ada and Barranca Parkway, officials said.
The transportation center has been planned for more than 10 years by the city, the Irvine Co., Spectrumotion (a transportation management association), Caltrans, Amtrak, Santa Fe Railroad, Greyhound and the Orange County Transit District.
Eventually, Irvine officials hope to tie the transportation center to other locations in Irvine with an automated light-rail system.
