Archbishop John J. Maguire, 84, a long-time aide to Cardinal Francis Spellman, died Thursday after a lengthy illness. Maguire, who became co-adjudicator archbishop for the Diocese of New York in 1965, also assisted Cardinal Terence Cooke during his tenure. Maguire retired in January, 1980. Maguire was ordained in December, 1928. In October, 1940, Spellman named him assistant chancellor for the archdiocese. He became chancellor in 1947. Pope John XXIII named him auxiliary bishop to Spellman in 1959. In New York on July 6.
