Arcadia : Phone Tax Considered

Residents may have to pay a 5% tax on interstate and international telephone calls if the City Council approves an ordinance to be introduced at its meeting Tuesday, City Clerk June Alford said.

City officials estimate that the tax would raise $225,000. Such taxes are permitted by a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling, according to a report by Gerald Parker, city treasurer and acting finance director.

Alhambra proposed a similar tax earlier this year, but the council rejected it. Pasadena, however, adopted a 7.86% tax on long-distance and overseas telephone calls last month.
