“Twins†(No. 3) still hasn’t knocked off “Coming to Americaâ€--No. 1 on the Billboard rental chart--but that’s because the returns aren’t yet in from the big holiday weekend. “Twins†could be No. 1 next time. “My Stepmother Is an Alien†is doing terrific rental business, partly because of the spillover effects of the stars’ current smash movies--Dan Akyroyd’s “Ghostbusters II†and Kim Basinger’s “Batman.†“Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects†wasn’t big box-office (just $2.9 million) but, with Charles Bronson playing a vice cop on the trail of a child-prostitution ring, it has huge appeal for the action/adventure faction of the rental market, quickly climbing to No. 19. “Alien Nation†jumped to No. 7 in its second week on the charts.

* There was nothing rotten about “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ †performance at the box office--gross: $40.9 million. Featuring Steve Martin and Michael Caine as two con men working the French Rivera, it’s the kind of hit comedy that does boffo biz in the summer rental market. It debuted at No. 8 and, if “Twins†weren’t around, might have a good shot at unseating top-ranked “Coming to America.â€
