HIGH LIFE : A WEEKLY FORUM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS : 8 Students Honored for Work Project

Eight Garden Grove high school students were recently honored for success at an annual work-experience program.

The winners, who will each receive $25 and a certificate from the women’s division of the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce, are Cathy Holland, Bolsa Grande High School; Mary Thomas, Garden Grove; Linda Johnson, La Quinta; Rosa Guerrero, Santiago; Mike Ressler, Los Amigos; Chris Courtney, Pacifica; Chia Lam, Rancho Alamitos, and Michael Lipari, Lake.

The purpose of the program is for students to obtain positive work habits and attitudes desired by employers.

Douglas Enright, a recent graduate of Saddleback High School, received a $1,000 scholarship from Hughes Aircraft Co. for his performance in the 1988-89 Orange County Academic Decathlon.

Enright, who had the highest combined score in the math and science competition (he placed first in both divisions), was awarded the first scholarship ever presented to Academic Decathlon participants.

Enright also finished first in the economics competition. He was Saddleback’s valedictorian, a National Merit Scholarship finalist and a participant in the University Program for High School Scholars at UC Irvine. He plans to attend UCLA in the fall, majoring in applied mathematics.

Karen Walter, who will attend Stanford University, and Nhan Vu, who will attend Harvard University, both El Dorado High School graduates, and Brian Jones, a Brea-Olinda High graduate who will attend Princeton University, were named Dwight D. Eisenhower Scholarship winners. Each received a $1,000 scholarship that is provided by Republican Youth Associates of the Republican Party of Orange County.
