ON THE SIDELINES : Sox’s Kittle Faces Back Surgery

CHICAGO — Chicago White Sox designated hitter and first baseman Ron Kittle will undergo back surgery next week, the team has announced.
The announcement Tuesday apparently means that Kittle, who was among the American League leaders in home runs and RBIs when he left the Chicago White Sox lineup on June 19, will be lost for the rest of the season.
Dr. Michael Schafer, chairman of orthopedic surgery at Northwestern Medical School, has confirmed team doctor James Boscardin’s diagnosis that the 31-year-old Kittle has a herniated disc, the White Sox said. Both doctors decided that an operation, to be performed by Schafer immediately after the Fourth of July holiday, is needed to correct the problem.
Kittle, who has been on the 21-day disabled list since June 22, was batting .302, with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs.
