Angolan government and rebel forces honored the first day of a truce in the 14-year war between the Marxist government and Western-backed rebels. “Hostilities have ceased, but it is necessary to keep vigilance and be ready for combat so that the peace that has been launched becomes real and lasting,” Interior Minister Francisco Magalhaes Paiva said. Angolans crowded around newspaper stands in the capital of Luanda looking for more details of the cease-fire accord that went into effect two days after it was signed by President Jose Eduardo dos Santos and rebel leader Jonas Savimbi at an African summit in Gbadolite, Zaire.
