Senate OKs Vote on County Tax Boost

SACRAMENTO — The state Senate on Monday approved a bill that would let Orange County residents vote on a proposal to raise their sales taxes to pay for new jail and courthouse facilities.
By a 26-6 vote, the Senate approved the bill by Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach) that would allow the county, with approval from most of its voters, to impose a half-cent sales tax.
The tax would be used to pay off bonds issued to build and furnish juvenile and adult detention facilities and courthouse structures. Part of the tax money could also be used to operate the facilities.
The bill now goes before the Assembly.
