Trabuco Hills: Utility
Lunceford, a junior, was the Pacific Coast League’s most valuable player. She pitched, played shortstop and led the league with 35 hits in 70 at-bats for a .500 average. She led her team in runs scored (20), RBIs (16) and stolen bases (24). As a pitcher, she was 9-4 with an 0.62 ERA, striking out 63.
CHERYL LONGEWAY
Kennedy: P
Longeway (20-4), a sophomore, pitched one perfect game, nine one-hitters and 16 shutouts. She struck out 195 of 548 batters and had an 0.39 earned-run average. She helped Kennedy (23-5) win the Garden Grove League title and reach the semifinals of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs.
RAE RICE
Fountain Valley: P
Rice (9-5), a sophomore, helped Fountain Valley (19-7-1) claim a share of the Sunset League title and gain the quarterfinals of the 5-A playoffs. Rice, an all-league selection for the second year, had an 0.13 ERA. She struck out 167 of 373 batters and walked only 10. Rice hit .224 with nine RBIs.
STEPHANIE SMITH
Garden Grove: P
Smith (19-9), a junior, struck out 233 of 702 batters. She threw 14 shutouts, including four no-hitters, and had an 0.40 ERA. She was named most valuable player of the Garden Grove League, hitting .313 with two doubles, two triples and 14 RBIs. She struck out only three times in 96 at-bats.
LISA SCIARRINO
Western: C
Sciarrino, a junior, had a .406 batting average, leading her team in hits (37), runs scored (15) and RBIs (17). Only three runners stole bases against Sciarrino, the Orange League’s MVP. She had a .936 fielding percentage and was a major reason Western (26-2) reached the 4-A title game.
SHANNON DOLAN
Fountain Valley: C
Dolan, a sophomore, led her team in every offensive category. She had 29 hits in 89 at-bats for a .345 average, with 10 RBIs and 19 runs scored. Defensively, she committed only one error for a .996 fielding percentage. She was the co-most valuable player of the Sunset League.
NIKKANNI ANDREWS
Saddleback: Inf
Andrews, a junior shortstop, led Sea View League co-champion Saddleback (24-5) in every offensive category except stolen bases. She was second there, stealing bases in 19 of 20 attempts. The league’s co-MVP hit .463 with three triples and seven home runs and committed only three errors.
MISSI GYDE
Kennedy: Inf
Gyde, a senior shortstop, hit .256 with three doubles, two triples and two home runs. The Kennedy co-captain was selected to the all-Garden Grove League team for outstanding defensive play. She committed only four errors for a .958 fielding percentage. She will attend Northwestern in the fall.
RENEE PINA
Mission Viejo: Inf
Senior first baseman Pina led her team in hits (37) and runs scored (19). The leadoff hitter had a .398 average, stole 10 bases in 12 attempts and had 10 walks. An all-South Coast League selection, Pina helped Mission Viejo (18-11) reach the 3-A finals. She will attend Cal State Long Beach.
IVY PINKERTON
Western: Inf
Pinkerton, a senior shortstop, batted .208, but it was her defense that helped Western gain the 4-A final. Named the most valuable defensive player in the 4-A division of the Canyon tournament, she had a .905 fielding percentage. An all-Orange League selection, she will attend California.
SUZIE BERDIS
Kennedy: OF
Berdis, a senior center fielder, had a team-high 30 hits for a .333 average. She had a triple, double and home run and led her team in runs scored (21) and RBIs (19). An all-Garden Grove selection, Berdis stole 10 bases in 11 attempts and committed only one error for a .963 fielding percentage.
AMY BOND
Mission Viejo: OF
Bond, a senior center fielder, made consistently spectacular catches. The co-captain committed only two errors. She threw a runner out at the plate to save runs in two playoff games to help Mission Viejo reach the 3-A final. The all-South Coast League selection will attend UC Santa Barbara.
KELLY WARD
Sunny Hills: OF
Ward, a sophomore center fielder, hit .333. Batting leadoff for the Freeway League co-champions, she walked 19 times for an on-base percentage of .486. She scored 19 runs, had four RBIs and led the team in stolen bases (28). An all-league selection, Ward was errorless in league play.
