Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and Foreign Minister Moshe Arens have decided to drop former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky as their candidate to be U.N. ambassador, Israeli Television reported. It said the two Likud Party leaders made the decision because of opposition to Sharansky’s nomination from Finance Minister Shimon Peres, who heads the Labor Party. Likud and Labor share power in the Israeli Cabinet. Peres reportedly opposed Sharansky’s nomination on the grounds that it would antagonize the Soviet Union at a time when Israel is seeking better relations with Moscow and the Eastern Bloc.
