Ken Green, trying to make up for a playoff loss last year, had eight birdies for a six-under-par 66 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead over John Huston after three rounds of the $1-million Greater Greensboro Open golf tournament at Greensboro, N.C.

With a chance to win the $180,000 first-place money last year, Green lost in a playoff to Sandy Lyle after missing a three-foot putt that would have given him the victory in regulation.

Green, who is at 11-under-par 205, had birdies at the fifth, sixth and eighth holes for a front nine of 33 and a two-stroke lead over Huston at the turn.

After starting the back nine with another birdie, Green bogeyed the par-four 11th hole. Birdies at Nos. 13 and 14 put Green back in command, although Huston maintained the chase with birdies at Nos. 11, 13 and 16.

Green missed a four-foot putt to save par at No. 16, but he got that stroke back with a birdie at No. 17. At the 18th, he hit his 175-yard approach shot within three feet of the hole for his last birdie.

Huston, who started the day one shot behind the leaders, held the lead briefly as he teed off on No. 18, but his second shot was buried in a bunker and his third shot flew to the back of the green. Huston settled for bogey, a round of 67 and a total of 207.

Dave Eichelberger and Jim Booros, who along with Green and Duffy Waldorf shared the second-round lead, each shot 72s and were tied for third place with 211 totals.

Waldorf, the former UCLA All-American, had 10 bogeys and a birdie for an 81 and was at 220.

Arnold Palmer holed a chip shot from the fringe for an eagle to help the United States increase its lead over the International team after three rounds of the Seniors Chrysler Cup at Sarasota Fla.

The Americans won two matches, lost one and halved the fourth in team better-ball stroke play to lead the International squad, 38 1/2 to 21 1/2. The final 40 points will be decided in eight individual stroke-play matches today.

The eagle by Palmer and Dave Hill on the 12th hole helped them beat Roberto de Vicenzo and Doug Dalziel, 65-68. Al Geiberger and Orville Moody edged Bob Charles and Bruce Crampton, 69-70, for the other American victory.

Lynn Adams shot a four-under-par 68 for a two-stroke lead over defending champion Rosie Jones after three rounds of the women’s USX tournament at Gulfport, Fla.

Adams had a total of 205, 11 under par, at the Pasadena Yacht & Country Club. Jones shot a 71 for a 207.

First-round leader Lori Garbacz also shot a 71 and was at 208.
