Encinitas
Sheriff’s deputies labeled the death of a man and wounding of a woman in Encinitas Tursday an attempted murder and suicide. They said the man wounded his estranged wife and then turned the gun on himself.
George A. Beck, 54, was found on the floor of his wife’s residence in the 1700 block of South El Camino Real about 9 a.m. with a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.
His wife, Susan Gilman, 41, had been shot in the wrist and was found by sheriff’s deputies in an apartment next door. Deputy Coroner David Lodge said Gilman was treated at Palomar Hospital.
Sgt. Danny Goodrich of the sheriff’s homicide detail said Gilman’s 7-year-old daughter called 911 and reported that “a bad man had her mother.†Gilman’s daughter was found unhurt in a back bedroom.
Deputy Coroner Robert Engal said a divorce was imminent between Beck and Gilman and that Beck had opposed it. “He shot his wife, and then she fled the residence, apparently not seriously injured.†Beck then shot himself in the head, Engal said.
Beck was pronounced dead at the scene, Engal said.
