Tennis Roundup : Lendl, McEnroe Advance in Japan Open
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl and defending champion John McEnroe advanced to the third round, and Australian Pat Cash withdrew with an injured Achilles tendon Wednesday in the $752,500 Japan Open at Tokyo.
Lendl, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, needed a first-set tiebreaker for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Paul Chamberlin, ranked 96th in the world.
McEnroe, seeded third, breezed past Australian Brad Drewett, 6-2, 6-2, on the hardcourts of the Ariake Colosseum.
Cash, a former Wimbledon champion, suffered the injury during a second-round match when he stepped on his right foot after serving in the first set against Bill Scanlon. Cash was ahead, 4-2, when he pulled out.
Cash was not in excessive pain, according to officials, and a doctor will examine the injury to decide whether surgery is needed. If so, officials said Cash may fly to London or Melbourne to have it performed.
Unseeded Scott Davis, the 1985 Japan Open champion, upset eighth-seeded Mikael Pernfors of Sweden, 6-3, 6-2.
In women’s play, top-seeded Anne Minter of Australia defeated Marianne Werdel, 6-3, 6-4, and No. 2-seeded Belinda Cordwell of New Zealand beat Japan’s Nana Miyagi, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Ann Henricksson, seeded third, lost to Japan’s Kimiko Date, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-3.
Lendl broke service in the fifth game but then started the 10th game with a double fault, as Chamberlain broke back to tie the score, 5-5.
Lendl wrapped up the tiebreaker with a lob and a missed volley by Chamberlain, then took the second set with a service break in the fourth game.
Jerome Potier of France upset second-seeded Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), in the second round of a $200,000 tournament at Nice, France.
Alberto Mancini of Argentina, seeded fifth, outlasted Karol Novacek of Czechoslovakia, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-3), 6-4, in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
