College Baseball Roundup : Staton Powers Titans Over UCSB
Designated hitter David Staton hit three home runs and drove in eight runs to power Cal State Fullerton over UC Santa Barbara, 19-4, in a Big West Conference game Saturday at Campus Diamond in Goleta.
Staton’s four-for-four performance paced a 24-hit attack by Fullerton (23-12, 4-1). Left fielder Rich Gonzales went four for five, including a solo home run and a double. Center fielder Bobby Jones added another homer for the Titans.
Senior right-hander Danny DeVille scattered nine hits in seven innings to pick up his fifth win of the season without a defeat. UC Santa Barbara dropped to 21-15 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Cal State Fullerton will go after a three-game sweep of the Gauchos today with staff ace Huck Flener (8-0, 2.43 ERA) on the mound.
In another Big West Conference game:
Fresno St. 24, UC Irvine 4--All-American center fielder Tom Goodwin went five for seven and had three RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 26 games and lead visiting Fresno State (26-12, 4-1) before a crowd of 750 at Anteater Field. Third baseman Chris Falco collected four hits in six at-bats, including three doubles, and knocked in seven runs for Fresno State. Right-hander Erik Schaullstrom improved his record to 5-3. Fresno State scored 19 of its runs in the last three innings. The loss dropped UC Irvine’s record to 13-19-1 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
In Golden State Athletic Conference play:
Westmont 2-3, Southern California College 0-6--Right-hander Todd Ludwig (6-3) scattered six hits and did not give up a walk to pace visiting Westmont over Jim Dedrick (5-1) and Southern California College in the first game of a doubleheader at Vanguard Stadium. Freshman Phil Bejarano (3-1) registered the victory in the second game with two-inning relief help from Robert Mansfield. Junior third baseman Alex Andrade went two for two with three RBIs for Southern California College (20-12, 9-3) in the second game. Westmont is now 19-13 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
In CCAA play:
Cal State Los Angeles 13, Chapman 1--The Golden Eagles (17-20, 7-8) had 15 hits against four Chapman pitchers.
