Indiana Sophomore Jay Edwards to Quit College for NBA Bid
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Jay Edwards, the Big Ten Conference player of the year, will pass up his final two years of college eligibility and make himself available in the June 27 NBA draft, the Indiana University sports information office said today.
The 6-foot, 4-inch sophomore, who averaged 20 points a game, was a second-team All-America selection by the Associated Press.
Edwards has had academic problems at Indiana and underwent a drug rehabilitation program last fall.
The only other Indiana player to leave early for the NBA during Knight’s 18 years as coach was Isiah Thomas, who departed in 1981 after leading the Hoosiers to the second of their three NCAA championships under Knight.
