College Roundup : Northridge Sweeps Loyola in Volleyball Match

After losing its first seven matches in conference play this season, the Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball team posted its second victory in the past week with a 15-13, 15-8, 15-13 win over Loyola Marymount in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match Friday night at CSUN.

Leading the Matadors (5-8, 2-8) were sophomores Neil Coffman with 16 kills and Rafael Tulino with 12. The victory was the second in the last three matches for Northridge, which defeated UC Irvine, 15-1, 15-6, 15-9, last Saturday, and played well Tuesday at UCLA before losing, 19-17, 15-7, 16-14.

Chris Young had a match-high 17 kills for Loyola (2-8 in conference play) and teammate Chuck Donlon added 16.

BASEBALL

Mission 10, Compton 6--Art Monreal had two hits, including a solo home run in the eighth inning, for the Free Spirit in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at Compton.

Albert Torres and Shawn Fontenot each had two hits, and Fontenot added three runs batted in for Mission.

Mission, which led, 7-2, after three innings, improved to 3-8, 1-1 in conference play.

Westmont 5, The Master’s 1--Jeff Ludwig pitched a three-hitter and struck out six for host Westmont in a NAIA District 3 game.

GOLF

Pat Boyd fired a six-over-par 78 as Cal State Northridge moved into eighth place after the first round of the Southern California Invitational at Torrey Pines in La Jolla.

The Matadors shot 320, 17 strokes behind tournament leader USC. The 36-hole tournament concludes today.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Occidental 9, Redlands 0--The Tigers did not drop a set in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Redlands.

Occidental (6-2, 4-1) won 108 of 129 games. Kim Black and Kirstin Crabtree each won singles matches, 6-0, 6-0.

Sue Hulse and Stacy Harris each were 6-1, 6-1 winners.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 4-5, BYU-Hawaii 3-4--Teri Rupe singled home DeAndra Pilkington with the winning run with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

After BYU-Hawaii (2-4) scored once in the top of the seventh to tie the score, the Regals (2-2) began their rally with two out when Pilkington walked. Danielle Petrowski singled Pilkington to third, setting the stage for Rupe’s game-winning hit.

Leslie Stevens (1-0) pitched a complete game, striking out three and allowing seven hits and one earned run.

In the second game, right fielder Heidi Manu ended a late BYU-Hawaii threat by catching a fly ball and throwing out Melanie Wallertine at third base for the game’s final out. Michelle Campos was two for three with an RBI for Cal Lutheran. Pilkington was three for four and scored a run. She also pitched a complete game to even her record at 1-1.

Pierce 14, USC JV 4--The Brahmas exploded for 11 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break a 3-3 tie in the nonconference game at Pierce.

Michelle Lehmkuhl was three for five with three RBIs and three runs scored for Pierce (4-9). Teammate Cherie Warren was two for two and drove in a run.

University of San Diego 9-6, Occidental 3-0--Tiger pitcher Annemarie Bovinette was a victim of her own wildness in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader at San Diego.

Bovinette (0-2) walked seven, three of whom scored, as Occidental fell to 1-5.

USD scored the first nine runs in the opener. Occidental’s Jacinda Elias hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

Moorpark 2, Pasadena 1--Jeanna Duarte scored the winning run in the seventh on a throwing error by Mitchell Vargas.

Palomar 1, Moorpark 0--Kerry Masterson hit a bases-loaded fielder’s choice in the bottom of the eighth that scored Kerry Williams.
