The San Diego City Council on Tuesday approved construction of the $200-million Great American Plaza, which will include what would be the city’s tallest building, a 480-foot office tower housing the bank’s new headquarters.
The downtown complex, scheduled for completion in late 1991, will include a 33-story office tower, a 15-story hotel and a canopied trolley station that will link the existing trolley system with the planned Bayside line. The trolley stop will be the system’s first fully enclosed station.
The project is planned for two blocks bounded by Kettner Boulevard, India Street, B Street and Broadway.
It will include retail shops and a new space for the Museum of Photographic Arts. Plans call for a 300-seat theater, a photographic arts bookstore, administrative offices and about 5,000 square feet of exhibition space.
