College Roundup : Titans Qualify Four for NCAA Wrestling
Cal State Fullerton qualified four wrestlers for the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament Monday at the Pacific 10 conference finals at Arizona State.
David Jones finished second in the heavyweight division, while Erin Millsap (118 pounds) and Cody Bryant (134) had third-place finishes. Fullerton’s Scott Schumm (150) finished fourth and qualified as a wild card. The top three in each weight division, plus six wild-card entries, qualify for the NCAA tournament.
The NCAA meet will be March 15-17 in the Miriad Arena in Oklahoma City.
Arizona State won the meet with 88.75 points. It was the Sun Devils’ fifth consecutive conference championship. Fullerton finished sixth with 35.5 points.
Jones, who is ranked fifth in the nation, was pinned by third-ranked Pat McDade of Boise State in 3 minutes 19 seconds.
In nonconference baseball:
Cal State Fullerton 4, University of San Diego 1--Paul Johnson went the distance at San Diego. Johnson (1-1) struck out 12 and walked one. He allowed only an earned run in the seventh inning. David Staton had two hits, including a solo home run, and two runs batted in for the Titans (8-4). USD is 5-8.
