NAMES IN THE NEWS : A Courtship Made in Legislature Unites Maine Gov. and State Rep.
LEWISTON, Me. — A 10-year political romance led to the altar today for Gov. John McKernan and Rep. Olympia Snowe, Republicans whose courtship began in the state Legislature.
The wedding at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity was limited to family members and one pool photographer, followed by a private reception for wedding guests at the Blaine House governor’s mansion in Augusta.
McKernan, who is divorced, and Snowe, who was widowed when her husband was killed in a car crash, met at the state Capitol in the early 1970s when both served as state representatives.
Although the romance was an open secret, neither discussed it until an interview last week. “It just seemed like the right time to do it,” said McKernan, 40. “It’s one of those types of situations where you either fish or cut bait,” added Snowe, who turned 42 this week.
