MOSCOW — The Soviet Union conducted a low-yield underground nuclear test Friday of up to 20 kilotons at its main military testing area at Semipalatinsk, in Soviet Cental Asia, the official Tass press agency said.
The test, which took place at 7:01 a.m. Moscow time, was the third this year and the second in six days.
Twenty kilotons is the equivalent to 20,000 tons of TNT. The U.S. bomb dropped on Hiroshima in World War II had a yield of 13 kilotons.
