Savanna 91, Azusa 70--Sophomore forward Mustapha Abdi scored 35 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Rebels at Savanna. The Rebels (24-2), champions of the Orange League, will face Trabuco Hills on Friday in the second round.
Abdi’s 17 first-half points help Savanna take a 42-27 halftime lead. The Rebels outscored the Aztecs, 22-11, in the second quarter.
The Aztecs (15-9) cut the lead to, 46-36, on a basket by Lord Noble with 4:30 left in the third quarter.
Abdi and center Tim Tillman sparked a 10-4 run to put the game out of reach.
Tillman scored 22 points.
The Rebels’ 91 points were the most by the team since 1967. Abdi’s 35 points was the second highest in school history. Van Bye scored 43 in 1967.
Noble led the Aztecs with 24 points. Tony McGee, Azusa’s leading scorer, was held to 12 points before fouling out early in the third quarter.
