New Hampshire Ball Bearings issued a statement calling the U.S. Custom Service’s recent seizure of 4 million ball bearings made by the Chatsworth firm “a mistake.” The Customs office in Los Angeles took the action late last month, sources said, to investigate whether the parts were counterfeit or defective. New Hampshire said the bearings “are in no sense an inferior substitute.” The parts were bound for several major corporations, including General Motors and IBM, and some have been released by Customs. Customs officials refused to comment on the firm’s statement.
