A Taiwan air force jet fighter crashed in a rice paddy in mainland China after it ran out of fuel, officials said, but the pilot parachuted to safety. In Taiwan, a relative said he believes that the officer had defected to China to see his grandmother in Guangdong province. But a state radio official in Canton, 180 miles from the crash site, said Communist government officials do not believe the pilot defected. The official said it was thought that Lin Xianshun, 35, lost his way in heavy fog.
