The new president of overcrowded San Francisco State University, Robert A. Corrigan, proposed using the spacious grounds of the Army’s Presidio as a university-run “educational park” if the military proceeds with plans to close the historic base. Federal law requires most of the Presidio to become part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area if the Army shuts it down. But Corrigan told a meeting of educators and civic leaders it should become “a teaching and learning facility, under San Francisco State University’s leadership and direction, serving the (city’s) diverse cultural and ethnic communities.” The Presidio, with its 1,490 acres of tree-covered hillsides and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and Golden Gate Bridge, has operated as a military base since 1846. Currently, it is the headquarters of the 6th U.S. Army and is among 86 military installations nationwide slated to close.
