Calcavecchia Decides to Stick Around and Play at Torrey Pines
Mark Calcavecchia, the leading money winner on the PGA Tour this year, has informed tournament officials he will play in the Shearson Lehman Hutton Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course next week.
Calcavecchia already has won twice this year (Phoenix and Los Angeles) and has pocketed $358,952 in earnings. He missed a playoff in another tournament (Bob Hope Desert Classic) by one stroke.
Originally, Calcavecchia was going to return to his home in Florida after last week’s tournament at Riviera Country Club. But he has opted to compete in San Diego before the tour shifts to Florida.
Former champions that have committed to play are Steve Pate (1988), George Burns (‘87), Bob Tway (‘86), Gary Koch (‘84), Gary Hallberg (‘83), Johnny Miller (‘82), Tom Watson (’77 and ‘80) and Jay Haas (‘78).
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Courtie Miller and Kevin Flanagan of Torrey Pines High School and Terence Hamilton of Patrick Henry have been nominated as candidates for the 1989 McDonald’s All-American high school basketball team.
The players were selected out of 1,500 high school players nationwide. They are in the running to be one of 25 players selected to the 1989 McDonald’s All-American team, which will play in the McDonald’s All-American game at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo., April 23.
Miller and Hamilton, a pair of 6-foot-7 forwards, have signed letter’s of intent to attend San Diego State and Flanagan, a 6-10 center, has signed with Arizona.
BASEBALL
Rick Page, a catcher who played at Helix High, hit a two-run home run with one out in the ninth inning to give host U.S. International University a 7-5 victory over UC Irvine (1-2-1). Scott Coutts went three for five, including a three-run homer in the fifth to give USIU (3-2) a 4-2 lead. Steve May and Barry Williams hit solo homers and Jeff Oswalt (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
MEN’S TENNIS
Jose Luis Noriega defeated Yoram Baron, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles as the University of San Diego defeated U.S. International University, 8-1. Chris Toomey defeated Sennen Pamich, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles for the Toreros (4-1).
UC San Diego’s Francois Monar, Hunter Gallaway, Jeff French and Tim Ditzler won in both singles and doubles as the Tritons (1-2) defeated Point Loma Nazarene College, 7-2, in their season opener at home.
Ed Collins, the University of San Diego men’s tennis coach, will conduct a free clinic for players of all ages and skill levels Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the USD West Courts.
