COLLECTING FIREWOOD IN THE CLEVELAND NATIONAL FOREST

Each year, the National Forest Service issues 100 permits to collect firewood in the Trabuco District of the Cleveland National Forest, which extends into Orange County. Permit holders can collect one cord (128 cubic feet) of dead and down firewood for personal use--not for resale. The wood is mostly small diameter brush material with some fallen trees and limbs. Only about 15 permits for the current season remained as of Jan. 24. The $20 permits, good through Sept. 30, 1989, must be obtained in person at the Corona Ranger Station, 1147 E. 16th St. Office hours are weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; call (714) 736-1811 for information.
