Couple’s Marriage Hits the Skids on the Freeway, Officers Say

The freeway may have been smooth sailing, but it was a rocky road Tuesday night for one couple.

Even after their car turned over and the wife was injured, the husband and wife continued their verbal sparring, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP Officer Mike Lundquist said the accident occurred about 8:30 p.m. as Tammy and Robert Chambfri were southbound in their 1987 Yugo on the Costa Mesa Freeway, just north of McFadden Avenue in Tustin, traveling about 55 m.p.h.

“They were having a family dispute in the car,” Lundquist said. The wife, who was driving, told Officer Aaron Williamson that her husband grabbed the wheel, causing the car to hit the center wall, then careen across the lanes and roll over. The husband told the CHP that his wife had “swerved to scare him,” then lost control.

“She (said that) her husband was crazy. That’s a quote,” Lundquist said. “He’s quoted as saying, ‘She’s crazy.’ ”

Tammy Chambfri, 19, listed her address as Garden Grove. Robert Chambfri, 25, told officers he lives in La Palma. “Apparently they’re separated,” Lundquist said.

The wife, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, he said. The husband was not injured.

Asked if officers knew who won the argument, Lundquist replied: “Based on the injuries, I guess he did.”
