Varian Associates’ first-quarter net income totaled $9.3 million, contrasted with a loss of $17.6 million a year ago when the Palo Alto company had a $22.8-million after-tax charge for restructuring. Sales were up 8% to $287 million. The maker of scientific instruments and semiconductor equipment credited the results to increased orders for electron systems and in its Semiconductor Equipment Group.
