Loyola Women in Tie for 1st, Beat Portland, 66-55
The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team maintained a tie for first place in the West Coast Athletic Conference with a 66-55 victory Saturday over Portland at Gersten Pavilion.
The Lions improved to 3-1 in the conference and 11-7 overall. Portland fell to 3-13, 1-3 in the WCAC.
Loyola led 35-31 at the half and pulled away in the second half, building leads that reached 64-48. Guards Lynn Flanagan and Kristen Bruich scored 17 and 14 points to lead the Lion attack.
Flanagan hit 7 of 11 shots, and Bruich added 10 assists. Portland shot 50% in the first half, but the Lions held them to 8 of 27 shooting (29.6%) after halftime. Loyola shot 41% for the game and hit 14 of 20 from the foul line.
The Lions swept the weekend series, knocking off league leader Gonzaga 67-62 in overtime Friday to move into a tie for first place.
The Lions play host to Pepperdine at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
