Boys’ Soccer : Westminster Comes Back to Top Huntington Beach
Larry Rippe scored with 8 minutes left in overtime to give Westminster High School a 3-2 victory over Huntington Beach Wednesday in a Sunset League boys’ soccer match at Westminster.
Westminster (4-8 overall, 2-2 in league play) trailed, 2-0, at halftime. Mike McCasland cut the deficit to 2-1 early in the half on a penalty kick. Rippe tied the score midway through the half, and the two teams went into the Sunset League’s overtime period.
Sing Pravongvienkham scored 3 minutes into first half to give Huntington Beach (2-11, 1-3) a 1-0 lead. Glen Shilland scored midway through the half for a 2-0 lead.
Goalie Casey Kinsey made 4 saves in the first half for Westminster. Teammate To Sotoku made 4 saves in the second half and overtime. Steve Allison made 8 saves for Huntington Beach.
In another Sunset League match:
Fountain Valley 1, Marina 0--Kenny Handler scored 12 minutes into the match for host Fountain Valley (14-6-1, 2-2). Goalie Joey Penaflor made 9 saves for the shutout. Billy Klein made 9 saves for Marina.
In the Century League:
Canyon 1, Villa Park 1--Rich Skinner scored on an indirect free kick near the end of the first half to give Villa Park (10-2-5, 0-0-3) the lead. Canyon’s Jessie Flores tied the score with about minute to play. Canyon is 13-2-1, 2-0-1.
Santa Ana 3, Santa Ana Valley 1--The score was tied, 1-1, at halftime on goals by Santa Ana’s Marco Silva and Santa Ana Valley’s Phino Nnong. Francisco Chavez and Gus Placensia scored for Santa Ana (13-1-3, 3-0) in the second half.
In the Freeway League:
La Habra 3, Fullerton 1--Melcher Carillo, Eduardo Carabel and Ethan Saldana scored for host La Habra (6-5-2, 1-1-2). Jim Schindele scored for Fullerton, 1-3 in league play.
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 1, Western 0--Scott Maurer scored 11 minutes into the second half for Brea-Olinda (8-3-1, 2-0) at Western. Goalie Jeff Bettencourt made 9 saves for the Wildcats. Mike Dickson made 14 saves for Western (0-14, 0-3).
In the Garden Grove League:
Pacifica 3, Kennedy 1--Trung Do, Chad Noyes and Kevin Ashworth scored for Pacifica (9-0-1, 6-0). Pacifica, the No. 1 ranked team in the Southern Section 2-A, led, 2-1, at half. Goalies Joey Dillman and Eric Cadacio have allowed only 3 goals in 6 league games and 5 on the season. Diego Abbes scored the only goal for Kennedy, which is 4-1-1 in league play.
La Quinta 2, Garden Grove 0--Steve Kalajian and Chris Doherty scored for La Quinta (7-5-2, 3-1-1). Garden Grove is 2-3-0 in league play.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 6, Costa Mesa 2--Doug Bivens scored 2 goals for host Laguna Hills (7-3-4, 4-2-2).
Orange 3, Woodbridge 0--Omar Vasquez, Kevin Estareza and Salvador Anyes scored for Orange (5-8-3, 3-4-1) at Woodbridge.
Trabuco Hills 3, Laguna Beach 0--Lars Klemmings scored 2 goals and Matt Davis 1 for host Trabuco Hills (6-4-2, 4-2-1).
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 3, Estancia 1--David Pattison, Pete Scharnell and Bryan Mallin scored for host Newport Harbor (5-2-3, 1-1-1). Hector Espinosa scored for Estancia.
Saddleback 3, Corona del Mar 2--Jose Perez, Luis Gurrero and Eddy Stole scored goals as Saddleback (9-4-4, 2-0-1) built a 3-0 lead and the held on at Corona del Mar. The victory moves the Roadrunners into first place ahead of the Sea Kings, who lost for the first time in league play. Saddleback took a 3-0 in the first 5 minutes. Pat Callahan scored twice for the Sea Kings (8-4-4, 2-1).
University 2, Tustin 1--Zolti Csanyi and Indrajit Bavan scored for University (3-4-2, 1-2), which led, 2-0, at halftime. Tustin drops to 0-1-2 in league play.
