Prep Roundup : Tomasick Leads Newport Harbor Past Estancia
Danielle Tomasick scored 3 goals to lead Newport Harbor High School to a 3-2 victory over Estancia Tuesday in a Sea View League girls’ soccer match at Estancia.
Tomasick scored 2 of the goals on penalty kicks. The Sailors are 1-2 in league play.
Kekai Oliver and Danielle Straub scored for Estancia, which is also 1-2 in league play.
In the Empire League:
Esperanza 4, El Dorado 1--Junior Michelle Rullo scored her 13th and 14th goals of the season and sophomore Lynn Murray scored her 15th for host Esperanza (17-0-2, 4-0). El Dorado is 8-2-4 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.
In the Garden Grove League:
Pacifica 4, Kennedy 0--Noelle Rost and Karen Wleklinski each scored 2 goals to lead Pacifica (5-1-1, 3-0) at Kennedy. Goalie Mary Heinlein made 5 saves in the shutout.
In the Olympic League:
Orange Lutheran 5, Brethren 0--Pam Jefferies scored twice to lead host Orange Lutheran (3-7-1, 1-4-1). Goalie Amy DuPont made 1 save for the shutout.
In the Orange League:
Anaheim 4, Savanna 1--Kirsten Coombs scored 2 second-half goals to lead host Anaheim (6-4, 1-1).
Valencia 1, Western 0--Christina Yoseloff scored 3 minutes into the second half for Valencia at Western. Goalies Betsy Cruz and Dawnelle Scott combined for the shutout. Cruz made 1 save and Scott 2. Christina Haney made 11 saves for Western (7-6-1, 1-2).
In the South Coast League:
Capistrano Valley 1, Irvine 0--Cindy Attaway scored on a penalty kick in the first half for host Capistrano Valley (11-4, 3-1). Goalie Kathy Serfranski made 6 saves for the Cougars.
Dana Hills 1, El Toro 0--Helen Crowe scored on a penalty kick in the first half for Dana Hills (13-2-4, 3-0-1) at El Toro. Goalie Karla Gunderson made 7 saves for the shutout.
In the Sunset League:
Fountain Valley 3, Marina 1--Molly Kuykendall scored 2 goals for Fountain Valley at Marina. Janell Greenly also scored for the Barons. Suzie Gregarnic scored for Marina (9-6-2, 3-1-1).
Huntington Beach 0, Westminster 0--Goalie Gina Corbin made 6 saves for host Huntington Beach (7-8-3, 1-2-2). Julie Jones made 14 saves for Westminster.
In Academy League boys’ basketball:
Cal Lutheran 96, Heritage 41--Mike Geiger scored 26 points to lead Cal Lutheran at Heritage. Emmanuel Jackson scored 17 points for Heritage.
Newport Christian 70, St. Michael’s 61--John Bahnsen scored 33 points to lead Newport Christian (11-1) at St. Michael’s. Jeremy Clark scored 15 points for Newport Christian. Neal Grobler scored 27 points for St. Michael’s.
In the Olympic League:
Santa Margarita 55, Whitney 47--Jeff Layne had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead host Santa Margarita (6-8, 1-5) to its first league victory at the varsity level. Dan Bathey had 10 points for Santa Margarita.
Orange Lutheran 87, Capistrano Valley Christian 63--Pat Bagatourian scored 24 points and Daryl Cole 20 to lead Orange Lutheran (13-3, 6-0). Jason Rodarmel scored 27 points for Capistrano Valley Christian (4-11, 1-5).
Whittier Christian 76, Brethren 72 (2OT)--Scott Ferguson scored 19 points, including 3 in the second overtime, to lead Whittier Christian (12-4, 5-1). In the fourth quarter, Whittier Christian trailed, 65-62, but Paul McKinley made a 3-point field goal with 6 seconds left to send the game into overtime. McKinley scored 18 points.
In Angelus League boys’ soccer:
Mater Dei 5, St. Paul 1--Brian Oram scored 2 goals to lead host Mater Dei (6-8, 2-1). Matt Tanner, Marty Williams and Jason Blair also scored goals for the Monarchs.
In the Olympic League:
Santa Margarita 4, Whitney 1--Steve Feeney, Tim Markel, Oscar Mestre and Lou Pavlovich scored goals for host Santa Margarita (6-6, 2-4).
