The World : Aquino Says No to Marcos

Philippine President Corazon Aquino refused to allow Ferdinand E. Marcos back in the country even though the former president reportedly received last rites in a Honolulu hospital. A hospital spokesman said, however, “Doctors are fine-tuning his medication. He still remains in satisfactory condition and (is) improving.” “Considerations of national welfare and interest” caused her to reject a return for Marcos, Aquino said in Manila. Vice President Salvador Laurel had said in a radio interview that Marcos’ wife, Imelda, telephoned him to ask that he intercede with Aquino. Laurel said Aquino promised only to study the matter.
