Local News in Brief : Zone Change Approved
- Share via
The Gardena City Council has approved a zone change that allows a residential project to be built on Redondo Beach Boulevard at Van Ness Avenue, former site of the proposed Galaxy Mall.
The vote was 4 to 0, with Councilman Mas Fukai abstaining. Fukai’s son, Rick Fukai, is a real estate broker who sold the 9-acre site to developer Tai-Yu (Mike) Su of President Investment Co.
Edmond J. Russ, a spokesman for Su, has said the developer is considering building townhouses at the site.
The council voted to amend the city’s General Plan to change the zoning of the site--which was once a nursery--from commercial to medium-density residential. The council also approved changing an adjacent parcel from high-density to medium-density residential.
Su had proposed building the massive Galaxy Mall on the grounds of the former nursery but withdrew plans for the 580-unit, 2-story mall after residents protested that the project would attract crime and cause traffic congestion.
