Kevin McReynolds, New York Mets outfielder, Monday agreed to a 3-year contract worth $5.5 million.
McReynolds, who threatened to become a free agent after the 1989 season if he didn’t get a multiyear contract by Jan. 1, will receive a $500,000 signing bonus, $1.6 million in 1989, $1.3 million in 1990 and $2.1 million in 1991.
Tom Selakovich, McReynolds’ agent, said McReynolds will receive $2.3 million next season. A source said the Mets will pay $200,000 of McReynolds’ 1990 salary in 1989.
McReynolds batted .288 in 1988 with 27 home runs and 99 runs batted in.
He was fifth in the league in home runs, tied for fifth in RBIs and sixth in slugging percentage.
