Stephan Peterhansel and Guy Frequelin of France won the top two starting spots in the prologue for the African leg of the 11th Paris-Dakar rally.
Peterhansel finished ahead of 150 other motorcycle racers on his Yamaha 600 with a time of 6 minutes, 46.17 seconds for the 4-mile circuit,
Frequelin, driving a Peugeot, clocked a lap time of 7:18.27, best among the 240 automobiles.
