SAO PAULO, Brazil — Leading Brazilian ecologist Francisco Mendes, murdered last week, was buried Sunday in Xapuri, a small town near the Bolivian border.
Police said the funeral for Mendes, 44, a rubber tapper who had won an international reputation for his campaign against the destruction of the Amazon rain forest, took place without incident.
Mendes was killed Thursday night, just outside his house, when a gunman fired one shot into his chest at point-blank range, police said.
