Sri Lankan paramilitary forces killed 12 Sinhalese extremists, just hours after anti-government militants raided a tea plantation and set fire to 10 Tamil homes, police said. It was the worst burst of violence since Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa was elected president in Dec. 19 elections. More than 300 other Tamils fled the estate after the attack. Later, members of a paramilitary force, the People’s Revolutionary Red Army, retaliated by killing 12 Sinhalese.
