Money for Irvine Theatre

The approval of funds for the Irvine Theatre (“It’s Full Steam Ahead For the Irvine Theatre,” Dec. 15) reeks of another case of self-aggrandizement for a city struggling with periodic money shortfalls. Virtually every community surrounding Irvine has a facility and most have periodic financial problems.

The city of Irvine has approved millions of dollars to be allocated to the theater, as has UC Irvine. Most of this money is being channeled away from worthy causes involving public works. How well this money could be spent to aid the poor and homeless, especially when there is always resistance to fund such projects.

The university will bear a third of the (projected annual operating) deficit and the city two-thirds. Theater officials predict a $300,000 annual expenditure for the city, but of course, the officials are speaking through their hats to promote their welfare.

In any event, the bill to be paid now and in perpetuity will be borne by the taxpayers as it is public knowledge that paid attendance never comes close to fulfilling financial success.

The residents of Irvine will be due for a shock when the deficits keep mounting and mounting. My interest? I’m fearful that Mission Viejo will go down the same road at a later date.
